Intent

Our MFL curriculum is designed to provide excitement, enjoyment, challenge and to equip children with a positive attitude to language learning.  The skills, knowledge and understanding gained in learning a foreign language make a major contribution to the development of children’s ability to express themselves and gain an understanding of their own culture and those of others.  We seek to enable children to draw upon their own language learning skills, if they have acquired another language and to be able to recognise similarities and differences in all the languages they use.  We seek to enable pupils leaving us at the end of Year 6 to be confident in their French oral communication and ready to embark on the study of new languages in their secondary school.

At Winsor Primary children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 have the opportunity to learn French.

The children learn French through a variety of activities including, singing, games, joining in and responding to the teacher. The activities enable them to improve their oral and literacy skills.  In learning the language and  the associated grammar rules, they are encouraged to draw upon their own language skills.

They have opportunities to engage in conversations whilst learning to ask and answer questions.

In addition to learning the language, they are introduced to different cultural traditions, which allow them to reflect on their own cultural traditions.  Each year group has the opportunity to take part in a different cultural experience.

We provide children with a foundation in key vocabulary as a precursor for their continued language studies in secondary school.

EAL - English as an Additional Language

Children who have a first language other than English may need further intervention with their English language and understanding in order to support their academic and social development.

EAL learners need lots of opportunities for speaking and listening.  We encourage the use of their first language at home, as this will  be the language in which they have a richer vocabulary.  The skills that they learn in manipulating language in their mother tongue should be transferable and aid them in their acquisition of  English.  Key strategies we use for teaching, include peer support and collaborative learning activities.

We provide opportunities for children to rehearse language orally before starting written work.
